MINNEAPOLIS - Prior to tonight's game at Minnesota, the Chicago White Sox announced the following seven roster moves:
- Recalled RHP Chris Bassitt, RHP Scott Carroll, OF Jordan Danks, C Josh Phegley, INF Marcus Semien and LHP Eric Surkamp from Class AAA Charlotte;
- Purchased the contract of OF Michael Taylor from Charlotte.
Phegley, 26, was named an International League mid and postseason All-Star after hitting .274 (115-419) with 30 doubles, 23 home runs, 75 RBI and 69 runs scored with Charlotte. He ranked among the league leaders in extra-base hits (2nd, 57), homers (3rd) and slugging percentage (3rd, .530). Phegley threw out 43.6 percent (41-94) of attempted basestealers this season.
The 5-foot-10, 225-pound Phegley hit .206 (42-204) with four home runs and 22 RBI in 65 games last season, his first with the White Sox. He will wear uniform No. 36.
Semien, 23, made his first Opening Day roster with Chicago this season. He hit .218 (36-165) with seven doubles, three home runs and 18 RBI over 43 games before being optioned to Charlotte on June 1. All three of Semien's White Sox homers in 2014 have been go-ahead shots in the seventh inning or later. He will wear uniform No. 5.
Semien hit .267 (81-303) with 20 doubles, 15 homers, 52 RBI and 57 runs scored with the Knights this season, appearing in 42 games at shortstop, 17 at third base, 11 in left field and eight at second. He made his major-league debut with Chicago in 2013, batting .261 (18-69) with four doubles, three home runs, seven RBI and seven runs scored in 21 games.
Taylor, 28, hit .275 (120-437) with 32 doubles, 11 home runs, 69 RBI and 75 runs scored over 123 games between Charlotte and Class AAA Sacramento in the Oakland organization. He hit .375 (24-64) with RISP and .321 (9-28) with RISP/two outs while a member of the Knights. Taylor was acquired by the White Sox from the Athletics on June 14 in exchange for right-hander Jacob Sanchez. He will wear uniform No. 51.
The 6-foot-5, 255-pound Taylor appeared in 26 games with Oakland from 2011-13, hitting .135 (10-74) with one home run and one RBI. He was originally selected by Philadelphia in the fifth round of the 2007 draft out of Stanford University. Taylor was ranked by Baseball America as the No. 9 Prospect in the Athletics organization following the 2011 season and the 29th-best prospect overall prior to 2010.
Bassitt, 25, made his major-league debut in game two of Saturday's doubleheader vs. Detroit, suffering the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits over 6.1 IP. He was optioned to Charlotte following the start. Bassitt went 3-1 with a 1.56 ERA (6 ER/34.2 IP) and 36 strikeouts over six starts with Class AA Birmingham in 2014.
Carroll, 29, is 5-9 with a 5.28 ERA (63 ER/107.1 IP) over 22 games (16 starts) with the White Sox this season.
Danks, 28, is hitting .190 (15-79) with a double, two home runs, nine RBI and eight runs scored in 33 games over two stints with Chicago this season. He was 11-38 (.289) with a home run and four RBI in 12 games before being optioned to Charlotte on August 9.
Surkamp, 26, is 1-0 with a 6.91 ERA (11 ER/14.1 IP), five holds and 11 strikeouts in 23 relief appearances with Chicago this season. He has limited lefties to a .179 (5-28) average.
Following the moves, Chicago's active roster is at 32 and the 40-man roster is at 40.
