Buehrle wins Heart and Hustle Award

CHICAGO -- White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle has garnered quite a few accolades this year for his on-field performance.

Now, Buehrle can add another achievement to the list during his 2009 season.

Buehrle has been selected as this season's White Sox Heart and Hustle Award winner, which was presented to him on Saturday by White Sox legend Billy Pierce.

The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association created the Heart and Hustle Award in 2005, voted on by Alumni Major League players and presented annually to an active player who demonstrates a passion for the game of baseball and best embodies the values, spirit and traditions of the game. All 30 Major League teams select one player, with an overall winner named following the completion of the season.

Buehrle's list of achievements this season include throwing the 18th perfect game in Major League history when he defeated the Tampa Bay Rays, 5-0, at U.S. Cellular Field on July 23. Buehrle followed that performance up by retiring the first 17 Minnesota Twins hitters he saw to set a Major League record with 45 consecutive batters retired.

The 2009 Heart and Hustle Award will be presented at the Legends for Youth Dinner on Nov. 6 in New York. This year will mark the fifth time the MLBPAA has given this award.
