Flowers returns to White Sox on one-year contract

The White Sox avoided arbitration with catcher Tyler Flowers on Monday, agreeing to terms on a one-year, $950,000 deal.

The 27-year-old Flowers hit .195 with 10 home runs and 24 RBIs in 84 games for Chicago last season. His year was cut short when he underwent right shoulder surgery on Sept. 5, but Flowers is expected to begin his rehab program on Wednesday.

In the hours before Monday's deadline for clubs to tender contracts to arbitration-eligible players, Flowers was uncertain if the White Sox would choose to bring him back next season.

Flowers and Josh Phegley remain the two White Sox catching options currently under contract.

The White Sox did not tender a 2014 contract to right-handed pitcher Dylan Axelrod.
