Reed has time to bolster saves total

MINNEAPOLIS -- As the White Sox earned another road win Saturday night, one night after they ended their 10-game road skid, closer Addison Reed earned his career-high 30th save.

In only his second season as the South Siders' closer -- third overall -- Reed surpassed his 2012 mark of 29 saves (in 33 chances) in the club's 8-5 victory over the Twins at Target Field. With 31 saves in 36 chances following Sunday's 5-2 victory and six weeks left in the season, Reed is primed to extend that save count even further.

"He's good," manager Robin Ventura said. "He gets the opportunities and they've been slim chances for a while, so it's nice to get him back in there more on a consistent basis where he can kind of feel like he's ready every day."

Despite the career mark, Reed did show a slight dip in velocity over the past two nights, slipping from about 93-94 to 91 mph. Reed said everything is fine, and Ventura noted that everyone just has those couple of days where everything isn't quite there.

"I think everybody during the course of the year goes through little waves," Ventura said. "Maybe they throw a little harder this day than they do on other days. … It's just part of having a long season, being able to maintain it and get through it."

Through 53 appearances, Reed is 5-1 with a 3.30 ERA, allowing 22 runs (21 earned) over 57 1/3 innings.
