White Sox designate Gimenez for assignment; recall Phegley and Tekotte


Prior to tonight's game at Tampa Bay, the Chicago White Sox designated catcher Hector Gimenez for assignment and recalled catcher Josh Phegley and Blake Tekotte from Class AAA Charlotte.

Phegley, 25, is hitting .316 (73-231) with 18 doubles, 15 home runs and 41 RBI in 61 games with the Knights this season. The 5-foot-10, 220-pounder ranks among the International League leaders in slugging percentage (2nd, .597), OPS (3rd, .966) and average (6th) and has thrown out 40.7 percent (24-59) of attempted basestealers

Phegley was selected to represent the U.S. Team at the All-Star Futures Game on July 14 at New York's Citi Field and the IL at the Triple-A All-Star Game in Reno, Nev. on July 17. He won the MiLB Rawlings Gold Glove Award in 2012 and has thrown out 46.3 percent (138-298) of attempted basestealers over five minor-league seasons.

Phegley originally was selected by the White Sox with a sandwich pick (38th overall) between the first and second rounds of the 2009 draft out of Indiana University. He has no major-league experience and will wear uniform No. 36.

Tekotte, 26, is batting .249 (57-229) with 26 doubles, two triples, four home runs, 26 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 58 games with Charlotte in 2013. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound left-hander owns a .305 (32-105) average since June 1 and a .389 (14-36) mark with eight doubles, seven RBI and six runs scored in his last nine games. He ranks second in the IL in doubles.

Tekotte, who was acquired from San Diego on November 7, 2012 in exchange for pitcher Brandon Kloess, played in three games (one start) in his first stint with the Sox from April 20-28. He will wear uniform No. 18.

Gimenez, 30, is batting .191 (13-68) with two home runs and 10 RBI in 23 games (19 starts) with Chicago in 2013.The White Sox 40-man roster is at 39 players.
