Wise gets start as De Aza takes day off on turf

TORONTO -- Dewayne Wise led off and started in center field in place of Alejandro De Aza for Thursday's series finale against the Blue Jays.

De Aza, who is batting .230 with three homers and eight RBIs, will be available as a pinch-hitter or a late-game substitution, if needed.

"Just giving De Aza a day off on the turf," manager Robin Ventura said. "He'll be ready to go tomorrow or at some point today if we need him."

Wise has started just one game this season, in which he went 0-for-4 against the Mariners, but will be given a shot to produce against his former team.

The 35-year-old journeyman broke into the big leagues with the Blue Jays in 2000 and has played for the organization on three separate occasions, most recently in '11.

Wise has recorded two hits in nine at-bats this season, a year after hitting .259 with eight homers, 30 RBIs, 19 stolen bases and a .721 OPS over 101 games split between the White Sox and Yankees.
