Carter, 26, went 4-6 with a 4.60 ERA (32 ER/62.2 IP) and two saves over 39 appearances (one start) with Class AAA Charlotte last season. He is currently playing for Indios de Mayaguez in the Puerto Rican Winter League.
The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Carter has gone 35-37 with a 4.70 ERA (321 ER/615.0 IP) and 32 saves over seven seasons in the White Sox organization. He was selected by the Sox in the 29th round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft.
Johnson, 33, appeared in 14 games with the White Sox last season, hitting .364 (8-22) with three homers and six RBI. He hit three home runs on October 3 at Cleveland, becoming the 15th player in franchise history to accomplish the feat.
Johnson batted .267 (127-476) with 28 home runs and 85 RBI in 137 games with Charlotte before his contract was purchased by Chicago on September 1. He was signed by the White Sox as a free agent on January 31, 2012.
Right-handed pitcher Philip Humber today was claimed off waivers by the Houston Astros.
