White Sox add five players to 40-man roster


CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox have purchased the contracts of outfielder Jared Mitchell, catcher Josh Phegley, right-handed pitcher Andre Rienzo, left-handed pitcher Santos Rodriguez and right-handed pitcher Charles Shirek from Class AAA Charlotte.

Mitchell, 24, split last season between Class AA Birmingham and Charlotte, hitting .237 (108-455) with 13 triples, 11 home runs, 67 RBI, 69 runs scored and 21 stolen bases over 130 combined games.  The White Sox first-round pick in 2009 ranked among the organizational leaders in triples (1st), extra-base hits (T6th, 48), stolen bases (T7th), RBI (9th) and total bases (10th, 191).  Mitchell was named to the Southern League midseason All-Star Team.

Phegley, 24, batted .266 (105-394) with six homers, 48 RBI and 40 runs scored in 102 games with the Knights.  He led all International League catchers with a .996 (3 E/834 TC) fielding percentage and ranked second with a 46.2 (30-65) caught stealing percentage.  Phegley earned the MiLB Rawlings Gold Glove Award® for catchers and was named to the IL midseason All-Star Team.

Rienzo, 24, split 2012 between Class A Winston-Salem, Birmingham and Charlotte, going 7-3 with a 2.53 ERA (29 ER/103.1 IP), 113 strikeouts and one complete game over 18 starts.  He finished the season with the third-most strikeouts in the White Sox organization.  The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder went 1-1 with a 4.74 ERA (13 ER/24.2 IP) and 24 strikeouts over six starts with Salt River in the Arizona Fall League.  Rienzo is a member of Team Brazil who yesterday qualified for the World Baseball Classic.

Rodriguez, 24, went 2-4 with a 2.90 ERA (23 ER/71.1 IP), eight saves and 69 strikeouts over 42 combined relief appearances between Birmingham and Charlotte.  The left-hander ranked sixth in the organization in saves.

Shirek, 27, was 11-5 with a 3.65 ERA (69 ER/170.1 IP) and 117 strikeouts over 28 games (26 starts) with the Knights.  Shirek led the IL in IP and ranked among Chicago’s organizational leaders in IP (1st), wins (2nd), strikeouts (2nd) and ERA (5th).

With the moves, the White Sox 40-man roster increases to 39.
