Peavy nets first career Gold Glove Award
CHICAGO -- A pretty solid Tuesday got even better for Jake Peavy, as the White Sox right-hander was awarded his first career Rawlings Gold Glove.

Peavy, 31, actually shared the American League honor at pitcher with Tampa Bay's Jeremy Hellickson. Earlier on Tuesday, Peavy agreed to terms on a two-year, $29 million contract extension with the White Sox.

Over 37 chances in 2012, Peavy committed just one error. Opponents were successful on just 52.9 percent (9-for-17) of their stolen-base attempts while he was on the mound.

This defensive honor makes Peavy the third White Sox pitcher (sixth time) to win the Gold Glove, joining southpaws Mark Buehrle (2009-11) and Jim Kaat (1974-75). Buehrle extended his Gold Glove streak to four straight by winning the National League Gold Glove at pitcher with the Marlins.

The White Sox produced a Gold Glove winner for the fourth consecutive season, with Buehrle taking the honor in the previous three. It's just the third time in franchise history they have accomplished the feat (1990-93 and 1957-63). Prior to Peavy, the last eight White Sox Gold Gloves were captured by current manager Robin Ventura (1991-93, '96 and '98) at third base and Buehrle.

So this new piece of hardware will be staying with Peavy in Chicago.

"I'm just honored to win such a prestigious award," said Peavy via text on Tuesday night. "For it to be voted on by the managers and coaches around our league means even more.

"It's something we all take such pride in, in trying to be a complete player. To be recognized for it is truly humbling."

Catcher A.J. Pierzynski was a Gold Glove finalist, but Baltimore's Matt Wieters won the award.
