"But the difference on this one is, if I have a bad at-bat where it gets in there, it's affecting future at-bats in that game. I'm scrambling the rest of the game. That's the way it's been."
Konerko definitely will be out for Friday and Saturday's game, with a rest through the entire weekend standing as a distinct possibility. Nick Swisher moved to first base, giving Guillen the need for another outfielder in Wise.
Wise, who has spent parts of five seasons in the Major Leagues with Toronto, Atlanta and Cincinnati, had a .338 average with eight home runs, 18 RBIs, 31 runs scored and 12 stolen bases in 43 games for Charlotte. The 30-year-old veteran was happy to be back in the big leagues, after signing with the White Sox as a free agent on March 5.
"It feels awesome. It's what everybody plays the game for," said Wise of his return. "I'm just going to take advantage of any opportunity to play. I don't know exactly how long I'm going to be here."
"This is the best guy to help us right now," Guillen added.
Guillen actually told general manager Ken Williams he needed an extra body, told him what he needed and was sent Wise. When asked about Jerry Owens, Guillen said the fleet-footed leadoff man was passed over because he wouldn't play much for the White Sox, and he was hitting only .229 for Charlotte. The White Sox infield was covered with Alexei Ramirez and Pablo Ozuna.
There are no plans to place Konerko on the disabled list. Guillen believes providing him the weekend rest will be enough to get him ready to go by Monday in Cleveland at the latest.
"His hand is starting to bother him a little bit more and it's starting to bother him mentally, too," said Guillen of Konerko. "He hit a couple of balls hard, but every time he had a bad swing ... hopefully with a couple of days off, not off because I might use him as a pinch-hitter, but hopefully he'll get better.
"He's played like that for a little while, and I don't want him to get worse. Now, he's swinging the bat good, a lot better than the last two weeks."
Second baseman Danny Richar also was sent on an injury rehab assignment to Charlotte. Richar has been on the disabled list since March 29 with a fractured left rib.
